A day after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned plying of diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), authorities in Gurgaon have sprung into action. “We are aware of the order and action will be taken. But first, we will have to see if the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Gurgaon should be given the responsibility of framing a plan or should we hire an agency. We still have to read the order clearly and what it demands of us,” Deputy Commissioner T L Satyapraskash said. He, however, cautioned that it won’t be easy to implement the order on the ground. “There have been similar orders in the past that directly related to public well-being. This order particularly will be difficult to implement as there is a large number of floating population, who will have to be stopped from entering the city. The plan now is to figure out all the entry and exit points of the city and, accordingly, prepare a roadmap. Also, all this has to be done by the limited manpower we have,” he said. “Since the order is yet to reach us, we need to assess the size of intervention required for its implementation,” he said. According to data, 75,479 vehicles were registered in Gurgaon till December 2014 — 14,343 autorickshaws, 45,030 goods vehicles, 10,687 passenger vehicles, 1,418 buses and 4,001 other vehicles. An RTA official said that most vehicles registered after 2012 were diesel-fuelled. According to him, Gurgaon presently had over 1.2 lakh “old diesel-fuelled vehicles”. The NGT has also ordered “immediate stoppage” of construction activities on both sides of Golf Course Road in Gurgaon over air pollution concerns. Estate officers and executive engineers have already been directed to implement all NGT orders in letter and spirit.
