The East Calcutta wetlands may have been recognised by Wetlands International as "an international ecological site" under the Ramsar Convention, but they are not out of the woods yet. The battle to protect the 12,500 hectare wetlands, which began a decade ago, has received a boost with their inclusion on the Ramsar list.
