Ministers fear more than half the British coal industry could disappear within two to three years despite the $159m aid scheme announced by Stephen Byers, chief trade and industry minister. The two-year package aims to help the ailing British coal industry adapt to the lifting of restrictions later this year on gas-fired stations.
