As per the United Nations projections, India's present population of 975 million people will reach over a billion in 2001. India's population will surpass China's by 2040. There is little chance of India escaping this telling scenario, unless it acts and acts fast, says the outgoing United Nations' Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Director, Dr. Wasim Zaman.
