Heavy rain in North; 13 killed in U.P.

At least 13 people were killed in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh as heavy showers lashed North India on Monday. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 31.5 degrees Celsius, three less than normal, while the minimum was recorded at 26.5 degrees Celsius. The city received 2.2 mm of rainfall. In Uttar Pradesh, three people died after being struck by lightning in Azamgarh, two each died in Firozabad, Barabanki, Ambedkarnagar and Lakhimpur and one each in Bhadohi and Sultanpur in other rain-related incidents, including house collapse. Met office sources here said heavy rain and thundershowers occurred across the State. It has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places during the next 48 hours. Central Water Commission sources said that Sharda and Ghaghra river were in spate and flowing above the red mark at Palia Kalan, Elgin Bridge, Ayodhya and Turtipar while the Ganga was flowing above the danger mark at Ballia. A report from Barabanki said that about half-a-dozen villages around the Charsandi embankment were submerged in the water and administration was shifting people to safer places. Parts of Punjab and Haryana were lashed by moderate to heavy rains making the mercury dip by a few notches. Heavy showers (90.4 mm) lashed Chandigarh in the early hours of Monday leaving many roads flooded. The condition of several roads in Chandigarh has further worsened during the past one month due to rains. According to the local weather office, most places in Punjab were lashed by heavy rains. -- PTI
