Space weather researchers from America, Europe and Japan at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union, have presented the first observations of the hot, charged gas slung towards earth by the sun actually breaching the planet's magnetic defences. These observations vindicated a theory about the interaction between the sun and the earth that was proposed decades ago-and whose proof could have wide-ranging implications.
