In Toliara, western Madagascar, the war against deforestation is waged from a little green hand cart. Nono, a fruit vendor at the local market, pulls the vehicle around town for 30 hours a week, drumming up trade in its cargo of energy-efficient stoves. In return, he receives modest compensation. This tale of frugality and hard labour is typical of many grass roots environmental project in Madagascar. They are short of resources but long on determination to make an impact on both local development and big international issues.
