Britain has become the first country to grant a patent covering cloned earlystage human embryos-- a decision that could ignite new controversy among critics of biotechnology even though Geron Corp., the company licensed to use the patent, says it has no intention of creating cloned humans. The British patent, granted last week, covers both the cloning process made famous by the creation of Dolly, the cloned sheep, and some of the products of that process.
