Deadly cancers can now be detected before it is too late, thanks to new techniques that are not only faster and more effective but less painful. Just a few cells sucked out from the affected tissue under the microscope or sophisticated cameras screening various organs could tell doctors of a potentially fatal affliction, say researchers. Sophisticated cameras and computers are being used to screen and diagnose potential cases at the pre-cancer stage itself, says Dr Kusu Verma, head, Department of Pathology, AIIMS. Two new machines using sophisticated cameras to take pictures of deep-seated cancer tissues and computer software for analysis and identification of abnormalities are undergoing trials in the US, which may be available in India within next five years, Verma says.
