India in the dark

Across a broad swathe of northern India the lights went out on Tuesday morning. That statement alone hardly constitutes news, since most places in India experience several interruptions in the power supply every day. What made this event noteworthy was the number of people simultaneously affected, about 220 million, and the length of the outrage, 13 hours for some, longer for others. (editorial)
