India inspires Zambia's strategy to cut charcoal use

Taking the cue from rural and semi-rural India, Zambia is to promote clay cooking stoves and coal briquettest to cut its charcoal consumption to 30 per cent of fuel needs. "In (the strategy) involves efficient clay cooking stoves and coal briquettes as smokeless solid fuel alternatives," says Julius Banda, an expert in ceramics who helped to develop the stove after a visit to India where he saw similar stoves being used in villages and small towns around Delhi.
