Industry ministers balk at cost of EU chemicals plan

European Union industry ministers sounded alarm bells yesterday that a radical overhaul of EU chemicals regulations could harm Europe's competitiveness, EU sources said. The plan by the Commission to make chemical firms prove their products pose no threat to the environment, or face an EU-wide ban, could threaten the viability of smaller chemicals firms, the sources quoted ministers as saying during a closed-door meeting.
