The first allotment of the 500 houses for the Economically Weaker Section, constructed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, will start soon and continue till all the nearly-15,000 houses had have allotted to jhuggi-jhopri cluster households. Apart from this, the Delhi Government said in the Budget, presented by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, that it had invested Rs.2,597 crore till March 2012 in regularisation of unauthorised colonies for providing basic civic services therein. Ms. Dikshit said Rs.631 crore has been earmarked for such works in the current fiscal. She said the slum wing has also rehabilitated about 65,000 households from various JJ clusters in 29 slum rehabilitation colonies, wherein plots measuring 25 square metre, 18 sq m and 12.5 sq m have been allotted. She said Rs.85 crore had been provided to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) in 2011-12 to improve civic services in these colonies, adding that the DUSIB also set up 150 night shelters across Delhi, of which 66 have come up in permanent structures. In the area of city infrastructure, Ms. Dikshit said one carriageway of Signature Bridge at Wazirabad has been opened for traffic and another will be thrown open in July. She said the project in its entirety is scheduled for completion by 2013 end. A provision of Rs. 250 crore has been made for improving the 512 roads of over 60 feet width that have been transferred from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to the Public Works Department. Ms. Dikshit said Rs. 3,372 crore has been set aside for the transport sector and this constitutes 22 per cent of the total plan outlay. This money will be utilised for extension of the Barapullah elevated road project, making Ring Road signal-free between Vikaspuri and Wazirabad, purchasing 600 more new low floor buses for the Delhi Transport Corporation, taking up third phase of Delhi Metro and launching the mono rail in the trans-Yamuna area. As for water supply, She said about 81 per cent of Delhi households have piped water supply facility. Incidentally, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party members had at the start of the Budget session on Monday vociferously raised the issue of lack of water supply in various parts of Delhi, leading to three adjournments of the House. Ms. Dikshit said more water connections are being metered now and action to procure eight lakh more water meters has been initiated. She proposed a plan outlay of Rs.1,800 crore for water supply and sanitation sector in 2012-13. Addressing journalists following the presentation of the Budget, Ms. Dikshit said her government is also trying to improve power supply by tying up gas for the Bawana power plant. “At present, it is producing nearly 300 MW, while it should have been 750 MW by now. But as you know, there is a shortage of gas all over. We are hopeful that by December it will start functioning optimally. For this, we are in regular touch with both the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.”
