A consumer-focussed awareness campaign is being launched here on Wednesday, the International Ozone Day, to push what is claimed to be the "right choice in refrigeration." A global countdown has been under way since the 1987 Montreal Protocol for ringing out CFCs that harm the ozone layer. The refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector which uses thousands of tonnes of CFCs as coolants and in fridge foam lining is a prime target.Environmentalists such as Greenpeace are lobbying that RAC industries worldwide should change over to hydrocarbons(HCs).That is the subject of Wednesday's national consultation on 'Ecofrig - the Indian dimension,' organised by Swiss Coalition of Development Organisations and the Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS), Jaipur. The meet, the first such in India, will also mull the pros and cons of using U|HC and its availability in India.
