The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has sought early Government clearance for a Rs. 9,000 crore oil refinery in Tamil Nadu to help it meet the petroleum products demand in the southern region. It proposes to enter into a joint venture with Madras Refineries Limited (MRL) initially and subsequently with one of the foreign oil majors for the refinery to be located at Nagapattinam.
