Iraq's battered refineries battle pollution

Iraq's refineries, patched up after Gulf War bombing, are finding ways to process their polluting waste despite the constraints of United Nations sanctions, a senior oil official said yesterday. Ali Hamid, General Manager of the 400,000 barrels per day Northern Refineries Enterprise at Baiji, told Reuters the state-run enterprise produces 600 cubic metres an hour of industrial waste.
