After spurious mustard oil, it is spurious dal that has arrived at various shops in the city. Ingenious manufacturers of pulses are now selling urad dal disguised as moong dal.What makes the camouflage so lucrative is the fact that the price of Moong dal is at least Rs 45 a kg while that of the cheap urad dal being used is only about Rs 25 a kg. The manufacturers have been taking advantage of the shape of the two dals which is very much alike. A colouring agent is used cleverly and the camouflage is difficult to detect. The fraud comes to light once the dal is put in water. Then the shiny yellow moong dal reveals its true colours.
