The lakes in Jammu and Kashmir may become extinct if the present trend of depletion continues. The total area of the lakes is rapidly shrinking. In the last several years, efforts had been made to save the Dal lake, the main attraction for the tourists. The state of affairs has gone from bad to worse. On Friday, members of the J&K Assembly were shocked when the State Forest and Environment Minister, G.M. Sofi, disclosed that the largest lake in Asia, Wular Lake, has been reduced to around 20 per cent of its original size.
