A positive fallout of the Cola controversy could be a nation-wide movement for food safety, said G. Thyagarajan, chief scientific consultant to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) that submitted its report on pesticide residues and safety standards earlier this week. Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Thyagarajan, an expert in organic chemistry who was earlier Director of the Central Leather Research Institute, said: "the JPC report is not only about residues in sweetened aerated waters. If all the recommendations are implemented by the Government then we can make substantial improvements in overall food safety."
