A high-level panel chaired by Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Thursday cleared a project by the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) to mine uranium at village Gogi in Shahapur taluka. It falls in the newly-created Yadgir district of the State.
According to sources in the government, UCIL received clearance after four years of exploration at the village for uranium by scientists of the corporation. The source also confirmed that the place had more than 4,250 tonnes of uranium oxide deposit with a high grade of 0.1 per cent content. But UCIL now needs the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests clearance before they begin mining.
