The Kerala Cabinet has given administrative sanction for the first phase of the monorail project proposed for Thiruvananthapuram. The 22.2-km-long Technocity to Karamana corridor will be executed at a cost of Rs 3,590 crore, according to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Separately, the Cabinet also approved a proposal to purchase right of way from land owners for laying gas pipeline. The compensation has been fixed at 10 per cent of base price, which is calculated at five times the market price of the land. No land will be acquired for the purpose and it will remain with the owner, the Chief Minister said. The special compensation formula was arrived at after considering ‘typical conditions’ prevailing in the State. Administrative sanction has also been granted for a flyover at a cost of Rs 135 crore at the busy Edappally junction in Kochi, base for Lulu Mall, claimed to be the country’s largest. The State Government will invest Rs 95 crore in the project, with the rest sought to be raised as part of the Kochi Metro Rail project being executed concurrently. The Chief Minister added that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will execute the project.
