GUWAHATI: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has demanded the cancellation of the public hearing that will be held in Arunachal Pradesh regarding the construction of the 3,000–MW Dibang Hydroelectric Project in the State by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). KMSS has claimed that the people of Sadiya in Assam will be most affected by this project. KMSS Sadiya district committee president Bhuban Gogoi said, “The public hearing cannot be one–sided. But NHPC has not invited the people of Sadiya to take part in this public hearing, who will be most affected if this project is completed. Hence, we demand the cancellation of this public hearing.” The KMSS also launched a blockade against Arunachal Pradesh at Sadiya on March 9. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has also opposed the public hearing. AASU president Shankar Prasad Rai and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said, “We oppose this one–sided public hearing as the opinion of the people of Assam will not be heard during this hearing.” They said that AASU’s protest against big dam construction would continue.
