The proposal for interlinking major rivers of India by 2010 will not help in controlling flood and drought. It would rather destroy gene pool of different rivers, said Magsaysay Award winner Rajendra Singh Rane on Tuesday. In his last leg of Rastriya Jal Yatra, Singh who shot to fame after his successful water management in rural Rajasthan, said, "Character of water differs from river to river. When water of one river converges with another, it will lead to gene collision. The water having weak genes cannot thrive with the water of another river which has stronger gene character. It is just a mirage. The plan could not be materialised."
