The soil on Mars is too toxic to support life, according to research published in the publication Science. After analysing soil collected from the Red Planet by Nasa's Viking Landers, scientists at the California Institute of Technology concluded that highly reactive "superoxides" would destroy any organic molecules as soon as they began to form.
