The deforestation in Salakati–Fukagaon Reserve Forest under the Hultugaon Forest Division in Kokrajhar continues but the authority concerned has not taken any measure to check the massive felling of tress. A lot of valuable tress are allegedly being cut in the forest and are being supplied by smugglers in trucks to saw mills without any restriction. Valuable timber, especially sal, is being allegedly supplied to saw mills stationed at Bilasipara, Dhubri and Srirampur and some smugglers are earning huge profits. The Forester of Fukagaon Reserve Forest, despite having knowledge of the illegal felling of trees in the reserve forest has been maintaining silence, alleged the local people. When a section of reporters visited the forest some visuals of trees being cut were captured on camera but the Forester allegedly chose to ignore his duty. Talking to reporters, a forest employee said that the Forester hardly visited the forest area. He also alleged that some forest guards were involved with the timber smugglers. He further alleged that the Forest Department had been running a syndicate at various places in the Salakati area. Taxes ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 30,000 were charged from every timber, sand and gravel–carrying truck without issuing challan. A local person said that the authorities of the National Thermal Power Project at Salakati had given Rs 50 lakh for growing and plantation of tress in the Fukagaon Reserve Forest in 2013 but the department had done nothing. He also alleged that most of the timber seized by the Forest Department was sold with orders from the Foresters. The people of the area urged the higher authority of the Forest Department to take immediate action against the timber smugglers.
