The Marshall Plan to address the issue of poverty is a clear sign that the Government is committed to eradicate absolute poverty said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr E. Sinatambou during the launching of the UN Global Goals Campaign on 25 September at the headquarters of the Ministry.
Minister Sinatambou called for tangible results and highlighted that this campaign is anchored on three pillars, namely: social inclusion; economic development; and environmental protection. The Minister pointed out that official figures show that Mauritius is on the right track to attain the goals set fifteen years ago.
This campaign is organised in collaboration with the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office and Standard Chartered Mauritius
The United Nations' Global Goals for Sustainable Development are 17 ambitious goals that 193 leaders from around the world signed at the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2015. They aim to end extreme poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change for everyone by 2030.
In Mauritius, the Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, with the Standard Chartered Mauritius and the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office is driving an awareness campaign to communicate the Global Goals to the Mauritian population.
About the UN Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals are at the heart of the ambitious new global agenda that have been agreed and will be adopted by the 193 Member States at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit which was held from 25-27September 2015, in New York at the United Nations Headquarters. More than 160 world leaders are expected to be in New York to adopt the goals which builds on the UN's successful Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015) that have lifted millions people out of poverty. This new agenda will build on the successes and go further as it is a universal agenda that will improve the lives of all people around the world.
Through an integrated approach, the goals will tackle the social, economic and environmental challenges to achieve sustainable development to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The new Sustainable Development agenda will guide all countries on a path that will transform the lives of all people toward increased prosperity and greater well-being while protecting the environment.
