With 67 lakh vehicles already on Delhi roads and the figure set to rise in the coming years, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to construct 41 parkings across the city. But the civic body, is running behind schedule to come up with additional parking spaces. According to MCD sources, 22 conventional parking lots, 14 automated multi-level ones and 2 stack-parking are in the offing. Of the 41 parking sites that are in the pipeline, 13 were scheduled to be inaugurated by end of 2010 and beginning of 2011. “Parking at Block-E Hauz Khas Market, Munirka Market, Model Town and Mahavir Vatika in Gandhi Nagar were scheduled to be completed by June last year, but were delayed. According to MCD engineering department, almost 60 per cent work on these is complete,” said Jagdish Mamgain, Chairman of the Works Committee. At present, conventional parking lots have been planned near Shiva Market, Pitampura with a capacity of 187 vehicles, QU block, Pitampura 171 vehicles, J-8 Rajouri Garden 198 vehicles and 9/10 Subhash Nagar can accommodate 339. As many as 2,317 vehicles will find space in upcoming parking lots in Krishna Market Kalkaji, Jangpura, Bhogal, Community Centre in New Friends Colony, Shaheed Park on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and in Hauz Rani opposite district centre at Saket. Several of them were to be built by mid-2011 but the lack of environmental clearance, finance and other requisite clearances have slowed down the projects, issues which the MCD is working to resolve, an official said. For parkings at Janakpuri Block-C, Malviya Nagar Market, open land near PVR Saket, open land near PVR Vasant Lok, tenders have been re-invited. These would have a combined capacity of 1,926 vehicles. Proposals have been sent to INTACH for approval for parking sites at Ajmal Khan Park in Karol Bagh and in Kailash Colony. Once built, they are expected to hold nearly 800 vehicles. “As far as automated multi-level parking at Mandelia Chowk in Kamla Nagar is concerned, the construction is 50 per cent complete. For South Extension (part I and II), the parking would have a capacity of 1,600 cars. The proposal has been sent for approval but the market association is opposing it,” an official said. The civic body had planned four stack-parkings, out of which one behind Sheela Cinema has been inaugurated and plan for one at Keshav Market in Shalimar Bagh has been dropped as residents objected to the construction. For other two stack-parkings, on Satbhariwan road the design is being reworked, whereas, for parking lots at various sites in city zone, tenders have been invited.
