While much has been talked about encouraging public transport and making Delhi roads pedestrian and cycle-friendly, nothing concrete has been done about it till date.
In an RTI filed by activist Vedpal, it was found that to cater to around 25 lakh commuters of Delhi metro, there are only 85 bicycles and that too at just four stations.
These four stations are Vishwavidyalaya, Saket, Hauz Khas and Akshardham where each station has 20 cycles, other than Vishvawidyalaya which has 25 bicycles.
It was also found that a large number of passengers do not know if cycles are available and at which stations. "This is basically due to lack of advertising and lack of infrastructure by the government and authorities. Also there should be announcements inside the train," said Vedpal.
There is no provision or facility for a Metro commuter to get a bicycle on loan. They are operated or maintained by the DMRC.
The DMRC might have earned a lot of fame in meeting deadlines and increasing ridership but when it comes to maintaining cycles, a scheme which was begun with much fanfare, they have not been very successful.
"In the name of cycles and other projects, much is being spent. But when it comes to implementation, the authority is too slow," said a transport department official.
However, infrastructure is also a major problem in the Capital where riding cycles is a major risk and thus the project could not take off properly.
Initially when the system was started it was admired by people, especially the youth but lack of cycle tracks and space to ride cycles, huge flyovers everywhere and heavy encroachments have only discouraged riders.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) director Sunita Narain, too, met with an accident when she was riding a bicycle.
