Mining firms pick on GF

PANJIM: Alleging that the Goa Foundation (GF) had "tarnished their image" in connection with the excess iron ore production case which now stands to be withdrawn, mining firms have written to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) demanding "compensation". The 42 mining firms which were accused of excess production by GF, in their reply to the GSPCB, demanded that the show-cause notices issued to them be withdrawn claiming that GF has withdrawn its complaint. This comes against the backdrop, however, of the success of GF's Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court that led the CEC to crack down on the illegal mining sector in its interim report. The GF subsequently began the process of withdrawing its PILs on various facets of the mining scam pending in the High Court as it had approached the Apex Court and got relief. Accordingly, GF submitted a letter to GSPCB stating that it does not wish to continue with the proceedings on the issue of excess mining either. The mining companies, however, seem to have ignored the above and taken the stand that GF "wasted valuable time of GSPCB and mining firms" and "tarnished" their image thereby "mentally torturing and harassing" them. The GSPCB is likely to pass its final order in the matter in the first week of January.
