SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Mining Bindo M Lanong on Tuesday sought to allay apprehension that Mining Policy draft is to facilitate uranium mining in the State. "Uranium mining is in the domain of the Central Government and it has no link with the draft of Mining Policy," the minister said after the first meeting with various stakeholders before finalizing the draft. The final draft would be ready by this month, Lanong said. The Mining Policy would emphasise on systematizing the entire mining mechanism besides introducing latest technology to lessen the burden on the environment. During the meeting, various NGOs including coal miners expressed their apprehension about attracting huge foreign investment, which would push the small miners into the corner and also undermine the present tenure system. The Deputy Chief Minister, however, assured the stakeholders of examining their suggestions and apprehensions before framing the final draft of the Mining Policy. According to Lanong, the Policy would also see that child labour is totally stopped in the coal mines. The government is believed to be working on a rehabilitation package to help the children working in hazardous conditions in the coal mines of Jaintia Hills.
