KOLKATA, 25 JULY: Union agriculture ministry will review the performance of seven states, including West Bengal, in implementing BGREI (Bringing Green Revolution in Eastern India) tomorrow. A meeting in this regard will be held in the city with agriculture officials of Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and eastern Uttar Pradesh and an official from the ministry. The second phase of BGREI proposes a chain of measures to raise the yield of paddy. It also proposes building agricultural infrastructure in the seven states, where the project has been underway. The project is being implemented in the seven states, with an outlay that increased from Rs 400 crore in 2010 to Rs 1,000 crore in 2012. Under the project, the state government has already set up 452 demonstration centres to train farmers to use the latest technology and farming techniques. It’s not easy to convince farmers, who have for generations tilted the land in an almost unchanged fashion, to change, said an official while stressing on the function of the demonstration centres. The task of distributing the 10 new varieties of high-yielding seeds has been completed, said the official. The seeds have been provided by the Centre to help enhance production.
