Moves to save coal industry misfired, says study

Two-thirds of Britain's remaining deep coal mines face closure next year unless the government provides further aid, an independent study claims today. The report by CLG Energy Consultants says government efforts to rescue the industry by restricting construction of gas-fired power stations, halting unfair coal industry subsidies in other countries and developing new electricity trading arrangements have misfired.
