On any given day, 20,000 persons-- or ten trainloads of people --equivalent to 02 per cent of Mumbai's population is in the grip of schizophrenia. "Mercifully, 90 per cent of them recover and go on to lead productive lives," says Dr Ravi Abhyankar, organising secretary of the western chapter of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) . Adds Dr Abhyankar, " It is the alleviation of the suffering of the five to 10 per cent refractory population that remains one of the greatest challenges before psychiatry and society." The urban challenge of coping with a disabling disorder like schizophrenia, which affects one per cent of the population worldwide, will be one of the key themes at the 29th annual conference of the western zone psychiatrists, which begins on October 2 at the Rangasharada auditorium at Bandra Reclamation, Mumbai.
