The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, or Nabard, now aims to cover 3 crores rural families by linking 2 million self-help groups, or SHGs. For the current year (2005-06), a target of credit linking 2.5 lakh SHGs has been envisaged by the bank. While 50 per cent of this target would be achieved by commercial banks, the rest will be credit linked by the regional rural banks and the co-operative banks. Capacity building of the stakeholders has been the prime intervention carried out by Nabard in scaling up the SHG Bank Linkage programme. The micro-finance sector has undergone tremendous changes in India over the years with the advent of new players and adoption of innovative approaches. Nabard has therefore, reviewed it's training and capacity building approaches from time to time for improving its effectiveness, efficiency and coverage.
