The eighth meeting of the Nepal-India joint committee on inundation and flood management was held from February 4 to February 8 in Kathmandu. The Indian delegation was led by A Paramesham, member of Ganga Flood Control Commission, and the Nepali delegation was led by KP Regmi, director-general of the Department of Water-Induced Disaster Prevention. Both delegations visited the ongoing and proposed embankment and flood protection works along the Kamala, the Bagmati and the Lalbakeya rivers during the period. India has been providing financial assistance to Nepal for strengthening and extension of embankments along the Lalbakaiya, Bagmati, Kamla and Khando rivers. It has provided Rs 2917.68 million until now for embankment construction along these rivers. In a press statement, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu pledged further assistance for the construction of embankments along other major rivers as well. “Cooperation in water resources and river training is one of the most important areas of our bilateral relations,” the embassy’s press statement reads. It is estimated that about 250 small and large rivers flow from Nepal to India and constitute an important part of the Ganges river basin.
