A revised scheme which will be targeting girls belonging to the Scheduled Tribe and living in low literacy level districts was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday. The Centre plans to set aside nearly Rs 298.97 crore for the scheme in the Eleventh Five Year Plan. The gender-specific scheme will be implemented in 54 identified districts where the Scheduled Tribe population is 25 per cent or more and the Scheduled tribe female literacy below 35 per cent as per the 2001 census. Moreover, the government has decided that the revised scheme will also cover any other tribal blocks in the country that have an ST population of 25 per cent or more and a female literacy level among them of below 35 per cent. Under the revised scheme, the intervention will be at the primary, middle and secondary level and financial assistance at the rate of Rs 26,000 per students per annum will be provided. Through the scheme, the government hopes to bridge the literacy gap between the general female population and females belonging to Scheduled Tribes. It will be aiming to ensure 100 per cent enrolment of tribal girls in the identified districts and also keeping drop-out rates in check.
