Britain's outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease worsened, prompting initiatives by the UK government to tackle the crisis and the slaughter of animals in Germany and the Netherlands. The number of confirmed cases across Britain rose to 12 after animals at a further four farms and one abattoir were found to be infected.
