The Coastal Action Network (CAN), a coalition of non-governmental organisations(NGOs), plans to legally contest the National Thermal Power Corporation's (NTPC) move to get the sire for the Cheyyur plant decalssified from Coastal Regulation Zone-I. A CAN press release said that NTPC's request for reclassification was legally unsustainable, since the issue was not about the site being 1.5 km from the high tide line, but that the entire lagoon(a valuable brackish water area) has been classified as CRZ-I under the Coastal Zone Management Plan, which cannot be changed.
