A week before phase two of the odd-even scheme kicks in, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Delhi government to create awareness about the ill-effects of vehicular emission and burning of municipal solid waste by issuing advertisements on the lines of the vehicle-rationing scheme.
The NGT said the government should also keep a tab on Ambient Air Quality (AAQ) standards in the Capital and directed it to maintain AAQ within permissible limits.
“Why don’t you maintain AAQ standards in the city? We appreciate the odd-even formula, but what is your stand on vehicular pollution and burning of municipal solid waste? Why don’t you advertise it in the same way as the odd-even scheme,” an NGT bench headed by chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar said.
The order has come a day after the Tribunal set up a committee of officials to collect AAQ data from several locations in the city.
The green court also suggested introduction of destination buses in order to de-congest the Delhi roads.
“Why don’t you introduce destination buses? Say for example a bus which originates from Dwarka and terminates directly at Connaught Place. This will help reduce emission,” the bench said.
The Delhi government is implementing the second phase of odd-even between April 15 and April 30. During this period, private cars will be allowed to be on the road on alternate days depending on the last digit of their registration plates. Women driving alone, cars with school children in them, CNG-run vehicles and bikers will be exempt from the rule.
