Nilgiris to host international Climate Champions Meet

Thirty champions from 14 countries will attend the camp
Five students from the Nilgiris have been included in the camp
Udhagamandalam: An International Climate Champions Meet will be organised jointly by the British Council and the Nilgiri Documentation Centre (NDC) in the Nilgiris between January 24 and 30.
Stating this to press persons here on Sunday, the Director, NDC, Dharmalingam Venugopal, said that the meet to gain an understanding of the significance of the impact of climate change on the mountains would be the second of its kind. The first was organised in the Sunderbans last year.
Pointing out that the camp would be significant since it was coming in the wake of the recent natural calamity in the Nilgiris, he said that the International Climate Champions Programme of the British Council covers around 15 countries.
In India there were around 70 champions. Thirty champions from 14 countries will attend the seven day camp to observe the impact and anticipated impact of climate change on the people, land, forest, fauna, flora and general ecology of the Nilgiris, interpret the observations in the context of the respective countries of the participants. Stating that five students from the Nilgiris have been included in the camp as a special gesture, Mr. Venugopal said that the Salvation Army hostel in Coonoor will be the base camp.
The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Central Soil and water Conservation Research and Training Institute, WWF-India, SACON, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the Department of Communications and the PSG College of Arts and Sciences will be the research institutions.
Mr. Venugopal said that it was high time the attention of the international community was drawn to ecological problems confronting the Nilgiris.
