Nine persons dead, over 2 lakh affected in Arunachal flood

ITANAGAR: Five more deaths reported from remote Anjaw district bordering China took the toll to nine while another four persons still remained traceless in the wake of devastating floods that left over two lakh people affected spread over six districts.
Four persons were missing from worst affected Lohit district, official sources said here today. Economic adviser to the Chief Minister and lone MLA from Anjaw, Kalikho Pul today said five people died in different parts of the hilly district adding all seven administrative centers – Hayuliang, Hawai, Manchal, Goliang, Walong,Kibitho and Chaglogam were completely cut off.
About 35 major breaches all along the Tezu-Hayuliang road threw the surface communication totally out of gear. The district was completely devastated by landslides and flood triggered by torrential rain since September 16 last.
People were without food, water, electricity, fuel and domestic LPG cylinders, while the roads, bridges, culverts, standing crops suffered massive damages, the sources said adding most of the over 21,000 population were hard hit by the unprecedented natural calamities.
Even ration sortie could not be carried out due to constant bad weather, the source said adding all educational institution were closed.
The DC of Lohit said though weather remained cloudy with intermittent rains, the flood situation in the district improved with water level in all the major rivers and tributaries receding below the danger level. Rainfall data recorded in the district headquarters during last 24 hours was 51.10 mm.
Road communication to Tezu still remained cut-off from the rest of the country for the seventh consecutive day today. Water and electricity supply were yet to be restored in Tezu and Sunpura. Restoration of electricity may take a month’s time or more as towers crossing Lohit River had been washed away, DC R K Sharma added.
The East Siang district administration yesterday airdropped 80 bags of rice at Mer and Gadum villages of Mebo subdivision in the district which had been submerged by flood water since last couple of days.
Upper Siang district was facing acute shortage of essential commodities due to blockades at various points along the Yingkiong-Pasighat road. Incessant rains for the last 13-day have damaged roads between Padu and Simak stream while the bridge at Rottung was capsized due to flood, official sources informed. Flash flood and landslide adversely affected the normal life in West Siang district snapping surface communication and sweeping away large areas of cultivation land in many parts of the district.
The district was also reeling under darkness for the past three days, official sources from the district informed.
