Putting a step forward towards ensuring supply of piped drinking water to every households in Bihar as promised in his pre-election 'Seven Resolves', Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Wednesday inaugurated a total of 340 piped water supply schemes worth over Rs 215.46 crore through remote control, at a colourful programme organised at 'Samvad' auditorium here.
Of total 340 schemes, 265 are solar energy-run mini piped water supply schemes while rest 75 rural piped supply schemes installed by the public health engineering department (PHED).
These 75 rural piped water schemes have been installed in 75 panchayats of 20 districts. These schemes, from today, began providing safe and piped drinking water to altogether 3,976 families through taps in their homes. Besides, over 10,000 families would get safe drinking waters from 1,468 'stand posts' installed under these schemes.
Similarly, 265 solar energy-run mini piped water schemes have been installed in 257 panchayats of 31 districts. Around 30,000 families would get safe drinking waters from 4,409 'stand posts' installed under these schemes. "Of 265 mini schemes, 69 are installed with water filtration plants to ensure safe drinking water to rural population," the PHED minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma told TOI.
CM, on the occasion, also flagged-off altogether five mobile water testing vans. These water testing vans would move into villages of different zones across the state to test water in rural areas and take corrective measures.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Nitish called upon the PHED engineers to ensure quality of the drinking waters being supplied through the new schemes. He also asked the engineers to maintain proper cleanliness in and around water storage tanks and stand posts.
Nitish said the resolve of ensuring piped water supply to every household was a 'very difficult task' but he would implement it within five years by ensuring proper use of state's resources. "People hardly believe that they will get piped water in every household even in rural areas. But I will fulfil the commitment made to public before the assembly elections. Since it is s resolve, it will be done," CM said amidst applause from audience. The department's minister Verma presided over the inaugural function.
