No cash, so dont announce new schemes: PM tells CMs

The UPA government's commitment to press ahead with social sector projects as outlined in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) is up against a serious resource crunch. That's because its plans to raise extra funds by shedding equity in cash-rich PSUs that would have financed these schemes have virtually been spiked following the decision to put off the divestment of Bhel. The Centre's helplessness was conveyed almost bluntly by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to participants at the Congress chief ministers conclave in Chandigarh last week. Dr Singh told NAC chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the 15 chief ministers in no uncertain terms that the party would have to desist from announcing new schemes since the UPA government hardly had enough money to even finance promised schemes in CMP.
