In the largest commitment yet by a major pharmaceutical company in the field of genomics, Novartis AG of Switzerland said it would invest $250 million in a proprietary research institute to be built near San Diego. The establishment of the institute, in La Jolla, California, could give Novartis a major competitive advantage as drug discovery moves into a new era based on the knowledge of how diseases progress at the molecular and genetic level.
