AFTER Dindigul and Theni, now several cases of diarrhoea have been reported for a second time within two weeks near Attur in Salem district. Nearly 100 people, including children, have been suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting since Tuesday at Sadhasivapuram near Attur. According to Health Department officials, many have been moved to Attur Government Hospital and some have been admitted to primary health centres at Thalaivasal and Sathapaddi. As more cases were being reported till Wednesday evening, the Department of Health Services set up a camp at Sadhasivapuram to provide preliminary treatment. A team, including Dr Vinoth, medical officer, Sathapadi PHC, Health officials from Thalaivasal block and nurses from PHCs, has been posted at the camp. Apart from treating patients, the medical team was also creating awareness among residents of safe drinking water and water contamination. Ruling out any case of cholera, the team members said they suspected water contamination as the cause for the diarrhoea outbreak.Sources said the contamination was traced to breached pipe lines in the public water distribution system and consequent mixing up of rainwater and drainage water. The civic body has swung into action to fix the repair, the sources added.Meanwhile, deputy director of Health Services Dr Nirmalson said the outbreak has been contained and no new case has been reported.
