Nuclear waste from atomic power stations has a half-life of 10,000 years or more. Against this timespan, the row within the German Government over whether to decommission the country's 19 nuclear reactors within a matter of years or over several decades appears very trivial. Yet the precise timetable and terms of decommissioning have sparked the most serious row within Germany's red-green coalition since it came to power in October.
