Organic farming and Poly House Farms are becoming the ‘in thing’ with many progressive farmers in Haryana who subscribe to the mantra of enhancing their agricultural income by adopting non-traditional methods. Deepak Sura, Sarpanch of village Bugana in Hisar, for instance has been influenced by Israeli agricultural practices and techniques. He has set up a Poly House Farm for growing fruits, vegetables and flowers including cucumber, capsicum, tomato, radish and carrot throughout the year.He disclosed that annually he reaped three crops and production was 15 to 30 times more than that carried out through traditional methods.
“A farmer can produce vegetables worth Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh annually,” he adds. According to officials, a Poly House Farm set up in one acre of land costs about Rs. 36 lakh out of which 65 per cent is granted as subsidy by the Central and State Governments and the farmer has to spend only about Rs. 12 lakh.
Mr.Sura said that for four Poly Houses set up in one acre of land, two farm workers were more than enough. During summer months, a Poly House required 5,000 to 7,000 litres of water daily.
