Guwahati: The All Assam Unnayan Parishad today demanded that the State government clarified its stand on the big dam issue. In a press meet today, the organization stated that science and technology is considered a boon to the society and that implementation of science and technology is generally done for the progress and welfare of mankind and not to generate any destruction. However it cautioned against  the use of technology to fulfil the desires and necessities of a group of people with vested interests while putting thousands of others in danger.

President, All Assam Unnayan Parishad, Mousum Kumar Ujir speaking during the press meet said, “The Unnayan Parishad is not against development. It is in favour of power production for future development, but the sad part is that Assam will be receive only a very small amount of the electricity generated from the Lower Subansiri project whereas the major part of it will be produced for Arunachal Pradesh and other benefits of the Central Government.”

He also stated that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi should have taken measures to ensure that Assam received more electricity than what has been allocated. He also said that it was expected that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would analyse the problems being faced by the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project and take precautions accordingly. “However, it is very agonizing that they have been ignoring the views and shattering the hopes and aspirations of the common people and have not, as yet, played any crucial role regarding the matter. If this prevailed, then the government and the project authority are likely to confront various problems related to the project”, he said.

General secretary of the organization Amar Rajkhowa said, “The heavy floods occurring in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji due to the release of water by NEEPCO is a live example of the problem that the State may face in the future. Political conspiracy will not be tolerated at the cost of people’s lives and public property”.

He also added that, very soon the organization will start a public movement against such conspiracies which would begin from the Dhubri district and gradually move to every part of the State.
