Tribals of Orissa received a massive bonanza on Gandhi Jayanti with the launch of the Rs 430-crore Centrally-aided Orissa Tribal Empowerment and Livelihood Programme (OTELP) in Bhubaneswar. Funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), DFID and World Food Programme (WFP), the project is supposed to benefit about 75,000 tribal families in the State over the next ten years. The programme, launched by Chief Minister Navin Patnaik, aims at ensuring food security and livelihood for the tribals. It would cover 30 of the most backward tribal-dominated blocks of Orissa in Gajpati, Kalahandi, Kandhmal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nowrangpur and Rayagada districts. "The thrust of the programme is on making tribals self-sufficient," said Mr Patnaik at the inaugural ceremony, underscoring his Government's commitment to the development of tribals and Dalits.
