In June Dr. Irvine-Halliday and his friends lit 54 homes and a Gompa of Thula Pokhara and Raje Danda villages in south eastern Kavrepalanchok district of Nepal. They were the world's first communities to be permanently and entirely lit by White Light Emitting Diode (WLED) lighting system. The environmentally lamps are simple and portable. According to Dr. Halliday one watt of electrical power can light 14 WLEDs which is more than sufficient to adequately light a poor rural home.
